christmas party, oliver's birthday, parades, oh my

I feel like I should blog. I'm sure my life is very interesting to others, even when it's not to me. Wait, I mean, it's very much so. I kind of forget about blogging, truth be told. I'm one of those people who slows right down with blogging as soon as things get busy. So, when I have lots of things to talk about, I talk about nothing. Go figure.

Christmas events are in full swing already. This last Friday was the Santa Clause parade here in town. The kids loved it. They liken the Santa Clause parade to Halloween, except that the candy-givers come to you. They stand there on the side of the road with their bags open and wait for people to drop candy in. I'm not sure that they're even all that interested in the floats themselves, except for the Santa float. They love Santa.

On Sunday we went to the Christmas party put on by my mom's work. She likes to sign us up to go. Someday when I have grand kids I'm sure I'll want to show them off too. We were one of the first ones there. We parked the van and who was getting out of the car behind us? Santa. My kids practically attacked him in the parking lot. All three of them raced over and gave him a big hug right away, squealing with delight, and then Jordan and Tennyson held his hands and escorted him into the building. It was hilarious. The guy who played Santa? Fantastic! He saw kids watching him get out of the car and he was HoHoHo-ing before he even shut his door. He stayed perfectly in character and didn't mind being at the bottom of the dog-pile. From there the kids skated, bowled, received gifts from Santa, and ate their weight in snacks.

Have I ever mentioned that Tennyson has problems not dropping stuff? Well the kids ran ahead and jumped into the snack line before we did. They grabbed plates and started to fill them. We judged the distance from the snack table to a place to sit and eat and naively figured they could handle that. Tennyson fills his plate, turns, takes one step and trips, sending the contents of his plate flying through the air and rolling under the next snack table. He got some impressive distance out of his chocolate cupcake. In typical Tennyson style, he scooped it back up and headed to his seat.

He did the same thing two more times. The next time his cupcake bounced into the air, hit the ground and crumbled. And yes, we know better than to let him do these things himself, but he is very sneaky and quickly heads over there the minute we're doing something with one of his many siblings.

On Saturday we headed out to Lorelie's house East of Winnipeg for a birthday party. The kids made faux-gingerbread houses and ate candy in lieu of lunch. They had a great time. The men, who were going to do a job that would take only 10 minutes, worked on that same job from about 2pm until 10pm, including a trip into the city to pick up extra parts. Oddly enough, no matter how hard they looked, they couldn't find tin at Best Buy and had to go to an actual hardware store too. It's not their fault it took so long. Really. Lorelie and I entertained ourselves by playing Payday and Life. We're cool enough to pull it off.

Did you know they make fully compostable chip bags now? We did our part for the environment and ate a whole bag of chips, just so we could compost that sucker.

Yep, the Christmas season is upon us. There will be much food, friends and family and very little rest or sleep until after the new year. That's cool with me.
